why you shouldn't abort your baby

How do you define a living thing? Does it move? Does it think? Does it respire? In essence, does the subject have what we would consider to be living qualities? These are questions we must ask ourselves when deciding on whether something is living or not, and through observations and logical reasoning we can come to conclusions about life.

As a science community, we have come to a consensus on the living characteristics: they are made of cells, obtain and use energy, grow and develop, reproduce, respond to stimulus and their environment, and they adapt to their environment. When considering whether a human being is living, it’s easy to check. A baby in its mother’s body has these characteristics.

They grow, their cells reproduce (obviously, their bodies can’t yet), they use energy, and respond to stimulus. If it looks like a bird, talks like a bird, it’s probably a bird, right? It if looks like a human, moves like a human, has the same internal organs as a human, functions like a human, grows inside of another human, has DNA that matches two parent humans, it’s probably a human. What’s crazy is that people attempt to argue that babies inside their mothers womb are not alive and are not human. They argue that these babies are simply a conglomerate of cells, a part of the mother’s body that she can do with what she wills.

It seems to be clear that the baby in the womb is a human, and that ending a life in the womb is equivalent to ending a life outside the womb.

Reasons for Having an Abortion:
I recently read an article on “Mommyish.com” titled “10 Reasons to Have an Abortion – Illustrated by Adorable Cats.” In the article the following reasons are presented for having an abortion: Having a baby would endanger your life and get in the way of your career, you didn’t plan on it, you are too young or too old, you feel strongly about overpopulation, you are worried about the health of the baby, you don’t want to be connected to the person who got you pregnant, or you simply don’t want to have a child. All of these reasons (with the exception of reason #1) are pretty petty reasons to murder a child, but we’ll still address their validity.

I May Die if I Have this Baby:
For one, having an abortion because you think it will endanger your life is the only reason an abortion should ever even be considered. When a trained medical professional concludes that if the pregnancy continues, it will harm or kill the mother, then a tough decision needs to be made. Of course, in this situation, I could see the legitimacy of an abortion, because you are trying to save life at the end of the day, that is the motivation behind doing something that is truly horrible. However, this should still be a decision that the parents can only make with the recommendation of a trained professional, not simply because they don’t want the responsibility of a child. And again, this is an extremely rare situation that should be addressed by those parents and that doctor. Currently, less than 1% of abortions happen because of concern for the mother’s health—which means a far less percent would actually result in damage to the mother. So, were going to murder in cold blood 99% of these babies for concern for less than 1%? This isn't a good reason to legalize abortion more broadly.

When it comes to taxes; people are willing to make the 1% of the financially achieving Americans pay more in taxes and make a sacrifice, but we won’t make the 1% of mothers who are endangered by having an abortion make a sacrifice for the 99%? To compromise, I think there should be a law where the less than 1% of mothers can have an abortion, but only under the circumstances when it can be recommended by a team of medical professionals (not just left-leaning that it may be harmful or kill the mother. This will allow for the greater than 99% of babies to be born and to not be murdered. Also, this would help in the small, rare situations where the birth of the baby may kill the mother.

It will Hurt my Career:
Having an abortion because you think it will endanger your career is extremely self-centered. Psalm 127:3-5 says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” People thinking that having a child will hurt their career is true; having a child will require sacrifices; but once you see that child, you will fall in love with it and you will want to make sacrifices for it.

​John 16:21 says, “When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.” The joy will be overwhelming, because children are a gift from God and a reward! This joy will surpass your desires to push yourself farther and farther into your career. While your career is important, and you should push yourself to be the best that you can be, murdering a child because you think it will hold you back is not a justifiable reason. Have faith in God that he will provide for you and your new child. Jesus Christ said in Mathew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” I encourage you to read this whole passage. But it’s the truth, God values you much more than the birds of the air, and the lilies of the field. Trust in Him to provide for you.

Also, verse 27 says that who can add an hour to his life by worrying. This is also true, worrying will actually decrease your lifespan because of the intense strain on your body due to the hormones released when you are stressed out. It can cause a raise in blood pressure and many other issue, most observable is simply discomfort. However, what’s crazy is that worrying can not only cause you to die younger, but it can cause your unborn child to not even get a chance to live. You worrying so much about how this new child will affect your life, may result in you deciding to have an abortion. Which means you won’t ever give God a chance to open opportunities for that child, and for you.

Many of the other reasons for having an abortion on this article were all self-centered reasons, and that’s fine. Because people genuinely believe that they are not actually killing a human being. They believe that they are simply denaturing a conglomerate of cells.

Another reason for having an abortion mentioned on Mommyish was not a selfish reason at all, it's because of "overpopulation". Which may seem like a legitimate reason at first read; however, it depends on what kind of kids you plan on having—and raising.

If I Have a Baby, it will Worsen the Overpopulation Problem:
For example, you might justify having an abortion because of overpopulation. Especially, if you believe that your offspring will simply be a burden on the world and a leach to our natural resources. But, my question for you is this: Why do you plan on having children that will be nothing more than burdens to society and our planet? You should plan on having kids that will be burden lifters—as John Piper would say. I plan on raising children who will be burden lifters for our society—spiritually and physically. I want to raise children who can witness to the masses as well as help solve world problems. I do not plan on having societal leaches, and neither should you. With God’s help and guidance, you will be able to raise children who will be burden lifters, because it will not be you that is raising your kids, but Christ through you. And hopefully, Christ will one day rule their hearts from the inside out.

Are We Overpopulated?
Also, is our planet overpopulated to the point that we should be encouraging abortions? Absolutely not. Presently, we are reaching a point where each subsequent billion people increase in world population will be harder and harder to achieve. Total fertility rates are decreasing overtime, especially with more and more woman taking on career-driven lifestyles. From an ecological standpoint, we are coming close to reaching the carrying capacity of humans. It has been estimated that we will top out at around 9 Billion people by 2050, and maintain that world population until 2300. So, we shouldn’t jump to conclusion that we should be aborting babies to slow down the rate at which we reach 9 Billion. It will come, and we will plateau, and our world population will sustain itself at that point unless there is a major catastrophe. We literally have so much production power that our government has paid farmers not to farm because it would flood the market with too much food—among other environmental reasons. So, we are not overpopulated. We will easily be able to support the 9 Billion number of world population. Don’t abort your child because of a false philosophy.

You may Raise the Next Einstein:
Just think, the baby you have may grow up to be the future scientist that solves the problems of the future. The problems of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, cancer, nerve repair, and blindness. Perhaps your child may the burden lifter that plays a key role in solving these problems. Unfortunately, there have been 55 million abortions since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. That’s 55,000,000—a lot of zeros—a lot of placeholders representing human beings who did not have a choice or a chance to become something great. So why is it considered “pro-choice?” Who has the choice? The baby certainly doesn’t get an input; so, it is the mother forcing her decision on another citizen of the United States of America, and that is not fair at all. That is not freedom. That is not liberty. You may say that the baby is not a citizen of the United States, in which case I would tell you that when a pregnant woman is murdered it is considered a double homicide. Why is it considered a double homicide? Because two people have been killed.

Just think how many of these babies would have grown up to be burden lifters: entrepreneurs, pastors, teachers, missionaries, philosophers, senators, architects, biologists, and doctors. Yes, some would become leaches, but again, it depends on what you plan on raising. Usually people who have abortions are well-to-do individuals with resources. Resources that would help their child get an education and propel them into a career that helps society. That lifts the burden on society. Now, in America especially, everyone gets an education; and an education from people who have degrees. Anyone can take advantage of this opportunity, and become a burden lifter for society.

Just imagine if all the major contributing scientists in our world had been aborted, life on earth would be miserable. We would still be trying to figure out what an infection is, and why people get sick.

Also, it doesn’t matter that the child will have the perfect resources. Many people have come from nothing and made major contributions to our planet. Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin and was named by Time magazine as one of the top 100 Important People of the 20th Century. He was born to a Scotland farmer. Nowadays, his father and mother could have very well decided that they couldn’t afford another mouth to feed, another child to raise. Praise God that abortion was not relevant at the time. It was not an option. That baby was born. And now we have Penicillin, there’s no telling what else could have been discovered recently from one of the 55 million people who we haven’t given a chance to make these types of discoveries.

Rising Populations are Good for the Economy:
We think that we have it all figured out, that we can take matters into our own hands, and that it will be better for society. This is a false mindset. Because truly, an increasing population is good for society. For example, we cannot have more people receiving Medicaid benefits than there is people working and paying into the system. This is a problem we are running into because of our decrease in population increase. The per capita burden of taxation is increased, which hurts our economy, and individual’s well-being and take home incomes.

When we have an increasing population, we have an increase in the need for production. With this increasing demand, we have companies that fill the need, hire people, raise wages for current employees, and expand their companies. Also, new companies pop up everywhere who can offer competitive prices. And even though I hate socialist programs, with a rising population we have more people paying into certain programs then there are receiving the benefits from them—which of course keeps these programs afloat. Ben Bernanke may tell you that decreasing population growth rates are good for our country, but most of his arguments are bizarre and actually don’t make a lot of sense when looked at from a free-market or pseudo-socialist standpoint.

How Fast are We Aborting Babies?

It was at 54 by the time I exited the page. And that is why I write about abortion, that is why I talk about the difficult topic, because I won’t that 54 to get a chance. They deserve a chance to be burden lifters, they deserve a chance to decide how they want to live their life. You should not make that decision for them.
